Often called the capital of the Camargue, this seaside commune is both a pilgrimage site and a beach resort. Its narrow lanes cluster around a fortified church from the 11th and 12th centuries. Its inhabitants are called Saintois.

History

The site is mentioned in the 4th century by Avienus as oppidum priscum Ra. In the 6th century Caesarius of Arles founded a convent here, and the place became Sancta Maria de Ratis, then Notre-Dame-de-la-Barque and finally Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer. The present name dates from 1838. Legend says Mary Jacobe, Mary Salome and their servant Sara landed here by boat.
