At the gateway to the Camargue, in the south-east of the Gard, Saint-Gilles is known for its 12th-century abbey church, a stop on the Way of St James listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
History
Once a port used by merchants, pilgrims and crusaders, Saint-Gilles lies at the end of the Régordane road from the Massif Central. The Counts of Toulouse also held the title of Counts of Saint-Gilles; a Saint-Gilles coinage was created in 1095.
