A commune created in 1904 between the Grand Rhône, the eastern boundary of the Camargue, and the Gulf of Fos. A port town attached to the port of Marseille, it is surrounded by marshes and salt pans and known for its Napoléon, Olga and Carteau beaches.

History

After the flood of winter 1711 shifted the course of the Rhône, a tax on salt transport paid for embanking the new arm. In 1737 it funded the Tour Saint-Louis, then at the river’s main mouth. The Saint-Louis canal was decreed by Napoleon III in 1863 and the harbour basin was created in 1871.
