A stopover for birds
The Camargue is a major migration stopover: about 150,000 ducks and waterbirds pass through each year, and many winter on the Vaccarès. In 2000-2005 it was France’s top site for wintering birds. The national reserve lists 276 bird species.
Flamingos and cranes
In summer up to 30,000 flamingos are present. Common cranes are increasingly numerous: more than 10,000 wintered here around 2016-2017.
In the marshes
The European pond turtle lives in the marshes and canals. The coypu, introduced in the 19th century, is well established. The Camargue also has 40 species of mosquito, and the wolf is present.
Domestic animals
Camargue bulls and horses live semi-wild in the manades.
