A small grey horse
The Camargue is a breed of small, hardy grey saddle horses, traditionally living free in the marshes. It is often considered one of the oldest breeds in the world. In 1861 it was described as 1.32 to 1.34 m tall and always greyish white.
Official recognition
After a decline in the early 20th century, the breeders’ association was founded in 1964 (helped by the success of the film *White Mane*). The stud book was created in 1968 and the breed was officially recognised in 1978.
Today
Raised semi-wild in the manades, it is mostly ridden for equestrian tourism. With the bull and the flamingo, it is one of the three symbols of the Camargue and remains the gardians’ mount.
