Stops
Saint-Gilles abbey church
We start in Saint-Gilles, gateway to the Camargue. The abbey church, a stop on the Via Tolosana to Compostela, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Don’t miss its Romanesque façade with three portals and the Vis de Saint-Gilles staircase.
Gallician and the Scamandre
Gallician, on the Rhône-Sète canal, lives from vines, fishing and reed cutting. Nearby is the Scamandre regional nature reserve.
The Tour Carbonnière
The Tour Carbonnière, in the middle of the marshes, was the only way into Aigues-Mortes. A text of 1346 calls it the key of the kingdom in this region. Its terrace offers a panorama over the Petite Camargue.
Aigues-Mortes
Aigues-Mortes and its walls, the town founded by Saint Louis to open his kingdom to the Mediterranean.
The Espiguette headland
The route ends at L’Espiguette, east of Le Grau-du-Roi: nearly 18 kilometres of protected dunes and unspoilt beaches, overlooked by the lighthouse.
